The best ute under $85,000 in Australia has been revealed following the 2026 CarsGuide Car of the Year awards. The top three finalists for the category included the Ford Ranger, the Kia Tasman, and the BYD Shark 6. The judges eventually selected one winner after a period of debate and evaluation.

The field was narrowed down to these three models from a longer list of contenders in one of the market’s most competitive segments. The judges noted that the decision process was thorough and included healthy discussion among the editorial team.

The Ford Ranger, a perennial favorite, received high praise across the board. Every single CarsGuide judge voted for it in some capacity, placing it in their top three selections. The panel highlighted the vehicle’s capability and the variety of available options, particularly the new Super Duty and plug-in hybrid variants.

However, the Ranger faced some criticism regarding its plug-in Stormtrak model. Some judges felt the electric range in this variant was underwhelming, describing the move as “cynical,” while others appreciated the addition of hybrid technology. Despite the mixed feedback on the electric aspect, the Ranger was described as superior to almost every other ute in numerous ways by Managing Editor Tim Nicholson.

Kia’s entry into the dual-cab market with the Tasman was a first for the manufacturer. The judges were impressed by the interior quality and cabin space, noting that it offers one of the best interiors in the business. The vehicle performs well as a workhorse and comes with a long warranty. Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis pointed out that despite some controversy over the styling, the driving trends and attention to detail are not up for debate.

The electric disruption

The BYD Shark 6 made a significant impact on the dual-cab market last year. It achieved more than 18,000 sales without relying on the traditional features expected in the segment. It could not tow 3.5 tonnes, carry a full tonne, or use a diesel engine, yet it still became the fourth best-selling ute in Australia.

Replacing the diesel engine with a plug-in hybrid petrol powertrain resonated strongly with consumers. The judges liked the product’s ambition and its effect on the market, with Deputy News Editor Tom White suggesting it completely overhauled a segment that had become stagnant. The Shark 6 was noted for its style and technology, which helped it secure a spot on the podium.

While the judges debated the merits of each vehicle, the criteria for the award focused on a combination of driving performance, practicality, and value. The final decision weighed these factors against the specific constraints of the under-$85,000 price point. The winning model was selected based on the collective assessment of the editorial team, who looked at the cars as complete packages rather than focusing on individual features.
