Gentari Sdn Bhd, the clean energy subsidiary of Malaysia’s state-owned Petronas, has signed a memorandum of understanding with BYD Malaysia to develop a high-powered electric vehicle charging network across the country.

Flash Charging Technology

The partnership focuses on deploying BYD’s Flash Charging systems, which the company says can provide up to 400 km of driving range in just five minutes for compatible vehicles. Battery energy storage systems will also be integrated into the charging infrastructure.

Gentari currently operates over 600 EV charging points in Malaysia. Through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub, users can access an additional 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and India. The collaboration aims to improve convenience for the growing number of EV drivers.

National Targets and Infrastructure Planning

Sales of battery electric vehicles almost doubled to 53,500 units in the first nine months of 2026. To support further growth, the Malaysian government has set a target of expanding the national charging network to 30,000 points by 2030.

Under the MoU, the two companies will identify suitable locations for Flash Charging stations, including key intercity corridors. They will also evaluate power infrastructure, battery storage needs, and potential operating models for large-scale deployment.

Gentari CEO Sushil Purohit emphasized that the next phase of EV adoption depends on reliability and convenience, not just speed. “Drivers also need chargers in the right places, backed by reliable power and dependable operations,” he said.

BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang noted that Malaysia is a key market for the company. “Through our collaboration with Gentari, we look forward to exploring how this technology can contribute to a faster, more convenient and more connected charging experience for Malaysian EV users.”
