Smart confirms #5 SUV for Australia with price cuts
Smart has announced that its largest electric SUV, the #5, will be arriving in Australia, marking a significant milestone more than two years after its global debut in Byron Bay in August 2024. This confirmation comes as the company implements price reductions of up to $5000 across its existing #1 and #3 model ranges, resulting in Smart’s most affordable model now being priced below $50,000 before on-road costs for the first time.
Price Adjustments Across Current Models
The #1 Pro+ model now has a starting price of $49,900, plus on-road costs, which is a decrease from its previous price of $54,900. Similarly, the Premium model has seen a price reduction from $58,900 to $53,900. The high-performance #1 Brabus model has received a smaller price cut of $4000, with its price decreasing from $67,900 to $63,900.
Across the #3 model range, the Pro+ model has seen a price decrease from $57,900 to $52,900, while the Premium model’s price has been reduced from $61,900 to $56,900. The Brabus model’s price has also been decreased, from $70,900 to $65,900. Five out of the six #1 and #3 variants have received a price reduction of $5000, with the exception being the #1 Brabus model, which received a smaller reduction.
Specifications and Positioning of the #5 Model
Initially, Smart had planned to launch the #5 model in Australia in late 2025 or early 2026. However, the company later revised its timeline to prioritize production for other markets, pushing the launch to the second half of 2026. The latest announcement reaffirms the #5 model’s place in Smart’s local plans, although a specific on-sale date has not been confirmed.
The #5 model measures 4705mm in length, 1920mm in width, and 1705mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2900mm. As a five-seat SUV, it is significantly larger than the city cars that Smart is known for, and its size puts it in competition with models such as the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Zeekr 7X, Kia EV5, and Skoda Enyaq.

In international markets, the #5 model is available with either a 76kWh LFP battery or a larger 100kWh NMC battery. Models equipped with the larger battery feature an 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing for up to 400kW DC charging. According to Smart, this enables a 10-80 percent charge to be completed in approximately 18 minutes. The maximum WLTP range for the rear-wheel drive Premium model is 590km.
Performance and Safety Features
In right-hand drive markets such as New Zealand, the #5 model is available in Pro+, Premium, and range-topping Brabus variants. The Pro+ and Premium models share a 267kW rear motor, while the dual-motor Brabus model produces 475kW and can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds, with a WLTP range of up to 540km. Smart’s Australian website lists the Pro+ and Premium variants of the #5 model, both with a claimed WLTP range of 590km, alongside the Brabus model, although it is unclear whether all three will be available in local showrooms.
The #5 model features dual 13.0-inch OLED displays, a 230V vehicle-to-load outlet, and a cabin that can be converted into a camping-style bed. It has received a five-star Euro NCAP rating and was named the Best-in-Class large SUV for 2025, in addition to winning two Red Dot design awards for its styling and interior, which were influenced by Mercedes-Benz. However, it has not yet received a separate ANCAP Safety rating.
Market Context and Future Outlook
Following the price reduction, the #1 model is now priced similarly to the Volvo EX30, which starts at $49,990, and undercuts the Zeekr X, which is priced from $48,900 driveaway. All three models share Geely-group underpinnings and EV architecture. The rear-wheel drive #1 and #3 models are equipped with a 200kW/343Nm motor and a 62kWh usable battery, while the Brabus variants feature an additional front motor, resulting in a combined output of 313kW/584Nm and all-wheel drive. The WLTP range for these models spans 400-455km, depending on the variant, and both models have received five-star ANCAP ratings, in addition to Euro NCAP and C-NCAP certification.
Smart returned to the Australian market in 2024, after exiting in 2015, with its current generation of vehicles styled by Mercedes-Benz and developed in partnership with Geely. As the company does not report sales figures to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries or the Electric Vehicle Council, the #1 and #3 models do not appear in official VFACTS or EVC sales data. However, it is reported that Smart delivered approximately 500 vehicles in Australia during 2025, with a split of roughly 60:40 between the #3 and #1 models. The company’s retail presence is currently limited to Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, as well as online ordering through Smart Australia’s website.
