Toyota Land Cruiser Lives Up to Legacy
The 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser has been a subject of debate among Toyota enthusiasts, with some arguing that the smaller Prado model is not a “real” Land Cruiser. However, after a year-long review of the vehicle, it’s clear that the Prado is indeed a legitimate Land Cruiser.
Off-Road Capability and Reliability
The Land Cruiser has a “golden ratio” of wheelbase and overall length, which maximizes comfort and off-road abilities. It also has exceptional off-road capability and can go on extended safaris deep into the wilderness. Our test vehicle was extremely reliable, with no major issues over the course of 27,000 miles.
One of the key features of the Land Cruiser is its ability to handle challenging off-road terrain. The vehicle’s four-wheel-drive system and high ground clearance make it well-suited for handling rough trails and inclement weather.

Technology and Infotainment
While the Land Cruiser excels in many areas, its consumer-facing technology is somewhat outdated. The infotainment system, in particular, is not as powerful or user-friendly as some of its competitors. However, the Toyota App experience is a notable exception, with a functional and tidy interface that makes it easy to control various vehicle functions remotely.
Despite some limitations, the Land Cruiser’s technology is still capable of meeting the needs of most drivers. The vehicle’s navigation system, for example, is easy to use and provides accurate directions.
Fuel Economy and Cost
The Land Cruiser’s fuel economy is not one of its strong points, with an average of 18.4 mpg over the course of our test. This is 4.6 mpg under the EPA-rated combined fuel economy, and it resulted in significant fuel costs over the course of the year. We spent $7,632.30 on fuel over 26,829 miles, which works out to $636 per month.

However, it’s worth noting that gas prices increased significantly during our test period, which affected the overall cost of fuel. Additionally, the Land Cruiser’s fuel economy is still competitive with some of its rivals, such as the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and the Land Rover Defender 110.
Comparison to Competitors
The Land Cruiser’s fuel economy may not be its strongest suit, but it still compares favorably to some of its competitors. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, for example, managed only 17.3 mpg, while the Land Rover Defender 110 achieved 15.2 mpg. While these vehicles may have an edge in terms of off-road capability, the Land Cruiser’s overall package makes it a compelling choice for those who need a reliable and capable vehicle.
