BMW has patented a new electric scooter in India, the BMW Vision CE, which features self-balancing technology and eliminates the need for helmets or riding gear. This innovative scooter is part of BMW Motorrad’s broader vision to transform electric two-wheelers, building on designs like the CE 02 and CE 04, and aims to enhance both safety and riding enjoyment through advanced technology.

The BMW Vision CE is designed to provide a car-like experience on two wheels. Its self-balancing system, likely powered by sensors and electric actuators, keeps the scooter upright when stationary, so riders don’t need to put their feet down. This feature is particularly useful during stops and starts, mimicking the convenience of driving a car. While the scooter is self-balancing, a stand is still provided for use when the vehicle is turned off and parked for extended periods, ensuring the system disengages to conserve battery and reduce component strain.

Safety First: No Helmet Required

A key feature of the BMW Vision CE is its focus on rider safety, offering 360° protection. The scooter’s design incorporates a tubular steel frame and a robust cage to protect riders, eliminating the need for helmets, gloves, or specialized clothing. The frame specifically safeguards the rider’s feet and legs, while side elements protect the hip and shoulder areas. Additionally, the scooter includes a four-point seatbelt, side impact protection, and foam cushioning on the cage, backrest, handlebar, and other parts to minimize injuries in case of an accident. It is also expected to feature rear-facing radar and driver-assistance systems for collision avoidance, further enhancing safety.

Performance and Range Speculation

While official specifications haven’t been released, some speculate the BMW Vision CE could be based on the CE 04 platform. The CE 04 boasts an 8.5 kWh battery, offering a 130 km range, a 42 hp motor with 62 Nm of peak torque, and a top speed of 120 km/h. However, the added safety features of the Vision CE might increase its weight, potentially impacting range and speed. BMW could address this through adjustments to the battery and motor, ensuring optimal performance despite the additional safety equipment.
