Fronx Jimny Lead India’s Car Exports Down 17%

Car exports from India fell 17.04% in August 2026 compared to the same month last year, with total shipments declining to 68,230 units. Despite this drop, Maruti Fronx and Suzuki Jimny emerged as the top exporters, together accounting for over a quarter of all exported vehicles. The data highlights a divergence between strong domestic demand, which rose 33.16% to 374,056 units, and weakening export volumes.
Top Exporters Drive Growth Amid Decline
Maruti Fronx led India’s car export rankings in August 2026 with 9,003 units shipped, representing a 38.17% increase from the previous year. Jimny followed closely with 8,435 units, surging 217.46% year-over-year. Together, these two models contributed 17,438 units, or roughly 25.56% of total car exports for the month. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios secured third place with 4,551 units, up 16.22% from August 2025.
The top five export models included Nissan Magnite at fourth with 4,500 units, a 36.31% decline from the prior year, and Toyota Hyryder at fifth with 4,414 units, down 10.10%. Notably, the top 30 models listed in the accompanying data accounted for 65,270 units, nearly identical to the 65,323 units recorded in August 2025, showing a marginal 0.08% decrease. This stability contrasts with the 17.04% drop in total exports, suggesting most of the decline came from models outside this top tier.
Mixed Performance Across Models
Several models in the top 10 experienced significant declines. Maruti Swift ranked sixth with 3,044 units, plummeting 56.45% from 6,990 units the previous year, marking the largest absolute drop among the listed models. Volkswagen Virtus fell 46.73% to 2,599 units, while Dzire decreased 43.35% to 2,355 units. Celerio also saw a 25.37% reduction, shipping 2,244 units compared to 3,007 units in August 2025.
In contrast, Maruti Ertiga rebounded strongly, jumping from 75 units to 1,755 units—a 2,240% increase on a low base. Mahindra XUV3XO exports grew 49.47% to 1,695 units, and Honda Raise rose 21.86% to 1,661 units. Hyundai Venue achieved robust growth, increasing 83.48% to 1,510 units. New entrants like Victoris and Tekton registered 1,341 and 1,334 units respectively, both against zero exports in the prior year, while Renault Kiger soared from 23 to 607 units, posting the highest percentage gain at 2,539.13%.
Export Trends and Domestic Strength
The 30 models listed accounted for 95.66% of India’s total car exports in August 2026. Their near-stable combined volumes show that the 17% overall decline stemmed primarily from shipments outside this group. Meanwhile, domestic sales surged to 374,056 units, a 33.16% increase from the previous year. When combined with exports, total vehicle sales reached 442,286 units, up 21.79% year-over-year. Exports represented 15.43% of this total, while domestic sales made up 84.57%.
