Tina Kandelaki Match TV Launch and Sports Media Role

Tina Kandelaki became chief producer of Match TV in 2015, when Gazprom Media was assembling a new federal sports television channel. She remained in the post until September 2021. The appointment was the clearest point at which her career moved from individual programmes and agency projects to responsibility for a national broadcaster.

The launch of Match TV

Match TV was created within Gazprom Media as a free-to-air sports channel. Its launch required a schedule capable of combining live events, news, analysis, documentaries and studio programmes. As chief producer, Kandelaki was publicly associated with the channel’s programming and presentation rather than with a single show.

Her earlier work gave her experience on both sides of production. She had presented The Smartest, Details and current-affairs programmes, and she had produced projects including Infomania. From 2008 to 2015 she was also a co-owner of Apostol, a communications agency. Match TV brought those strands together at a larger organisational scale.

Results reported by Gazprom Media

When Gazprom Media announced Kandelaki’s promotion in 2021, it reviewed the Match TV period in detail. The holding said the channel had received more than 20 awards under her leadership. Its list included five national TEFI awards, six MediaBrand awards, three Golden Ray prizes, recognition from Promax Asia and a best sports channel award at an international sports film festival.

Gazprom Media published those figures in its corporate announcement about Kandelaki’s 2021 promotion. They document the channel’s industry recognition while remaining the holding’s own summary of the Match TV period.

The holding also said Match TV became the most cited media outlet during the 2021 Summer Olympics, referring to Mediascope data for men aged 14-59 in Russian cities with more than 100,000 residents. This was a time-specific audience and citation measure, not a general claim that the channel led every category.

Production beyond the linear channel

Kandelaki’s sports-media work included projects produced with the PREMIER streaming service. Gazprom Media reported four joint releases in 2021: the series Rostov on the Line, the interview project 50 Questions Sport, the show How to Conquer a Champion and the reality programme Arshavin Changes Profession. These projects extended sports content beyond conventional match broadcasts.

The company also identified her as a producer of Big Game, a sixteen-part football series broadcast by STS in 2018. It listed more than ten productions made through collaboration with the IVI platform. The credits support a broader description of her Match-era work as a combination of channel management, factual entertainment and scripted or online production.

Leaving the chief producer post

On 8 September 2021 Gazprom Media appointed Kandelaki deputy chief executive. Alexander Tashchin, who had joined Match TV’s management in 2020, replaced her as chief producer. The change did not remove sports media from her responsibilities. The holding said she would continue to oversee the Gazprom Media Match division and take responsibility for developing the Match news agency.

At the same time, her remit expanded to entertainment channels including TNT, TV-3 and Friday. Match TV was therefore not an endpoint in her career. It became the experience on which a wider holding-level appointment was based.

Match TV in her professional biography

The Match TV years are distinct from Kandelaki’s earlier fame as a presenter. At STS, viewers associated her with the pace and style of particular programmes. At Match TV, the public role concerned a channel brand, its production strategy and a portfolio of sports content.

That difference explains why the 2015 appointment is frequently used as the dividing line between her television and media-management careers. She continued to appear on screen afterwards, but her principal responsibilities increasingly involved teams, production systems and several distribution platforms.

The six-year Match TV period also gave her the longest clearly documented channel-production role before her promotion to the parent holding. It connected the 2015 launch with the wider Gazprom Media appointment announced in 2021.
