The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 has posted a new Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record for front-wheel-drive production cars, clocking 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds around the 12.9-mile circuit. The time beats the previous record held by the Honda Civic Type R.

A pre-production version of the car already held the record for the fastest Volkswagen around the track last year.

This latest run shaved nearly two seconds off that time.

German racing driver Benny Leuchter was again behind the wheel.

The company revealed the car at a special event during last year’s 24 Hours race at the track, developing it specifically with the track in mind. The model is a celebratory model marking 50 years of the GTI nameplate.

Most powerful production Golf GTI ever

Unlike past anniversary editions that mainly added badges and wheels, the car gets real mechanical changes. Its EA888 evo4 LK3 2.0-liter engine produces 325 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.

That makes it the most powerful factory Golf GTI ever sold.

An electronically controlled limited-slip differential helps manage the front axle under hard acceleration. The car hits 62 mph in 5.3 seconds and tops out at 168 mph — also the fastest Golf GTI to date.

It included a dedicated track drive mode that optimizes the car for the 73 turns of the circuit. The record run used the optional GTI Performance package, which adds £3,675 to the Edition 50’s base price of £48,075.

What the Performance package brings

Ticking that option lowers the suspension by 5 mm.

It adds a lightweight titanium exhaust system and fits 19-inch forged alloy wheels. Those wheels come wrapped in semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza Race tires, which likely made a big difference on the record lap.

Leuchter has tested many Volkswagens at the circuit.

He described the track as ‘unique with its bends, very different sections, bumps and even jumps.’ He said the GTI combines impressive power with a very neutral setup and handles bumps well.

“The Golf GTI Edition 50 is therefore more than just an anniversary model,” Leuchter said. “It shows what performance in the compact segment can feel like when technical expertise, passion and 50 years of GTI history come together.”

The automaker plans to build the car only during its 2026 anniversary year. The track record adds something of a marketing claim, though the car’s limited production run means it is not exactly a volume seller.

The Nordschleife has long been a benchmark for hot hatch performance, and the GTI’s time puts it ahead of the Civic Type R for now.

Honda could respond with a faster version of its own.

That is the nature of the segment.
